Not-So-Retro-Owls

When I was growing up in the the '70s, I remember having some pretty groovy owl jewelry, some bookends and I think a few figurines on my dresser.  I still love owls and have a few around the house (nothing crazy as I am not an insane collector of anything - maybe dust - but that's neither here nor there) but over the last several years the whole "retro owl" trend thing has just pissed me off.  Not only are they not even RETRO looking, they are pretty much on every dumb ass thing you can purchase.  It's so annoying to me that this is actually a "trend", that I want to throw all my owls out the window and stab those little effers in their big hooty eyes.  (Okay, that's a bit much, but I take the '70s seriously!)

To get a better understanding of what I mean, go take a peek at Etsy.com (the biggest culprit of this BS) and search "retro owls".  At any given moment you can really have your fill of not-so-retro pukified owl items. It's a real freakin' nightmare.

Here are just a few examples I found...

Retro Owl Dog Collar
And you'd want this on your dog....why?

Retro Owl Green Bottle Cap Magnet
What?

Retro Owl Pocket Diaper
Nothing holds your infant's digested carrots and peas cuter than this, right?

Retro Owl Kindle Cover
Um, not so much.

So, my point is, let's stop with the not-so-retro-owl shit.  Because that is what it is, SHIT.  Go to your vintage shop, Goodwill store, or somewhere like the back of your grandmother's closet and find an owl there to display if you want one so badly.  That's a retro-owl! And please, for gawd sake's do NOT, under any circumstance, make anything with owl fabric that was not spun and woven 45+ years ago.

Thanks.

  1. I have some GREAT old owl stuff and wanted to do Alice's room with all of it, but just then the owl-splosion happened and all the other expectant mothers were going to do owls too. Ugh. So she has some koi fish curtains instead.

My owls actually are very groovy and old, the new ones just aren't the same. But I have to tell you the new hot design thing is bicycles, so you can tell anyone with current owl shit that they are SO last year.

    1. Okay, bicycles is just not anything I'm interested in for design. Yuk! I remember you saying awhile back that you hated the owl trend, too. I can't believe it's *STILL* a trend... I guess I'll have to give it another 40 years before I can display my owls. sigh.

  3. I blame Harry Potter. All of a sudden owls are "cool" again. Grr. They are deadly hunters of the night!

    1. Not sure if you remember Molly the Barn Owl 'live feed' craze, but when her baby's Daddy brought her meals at night, that was a sight to see! I caught a few live feedings! They are pretty wicked hunters for sure! Unfortunately, Harry Potter is to blame for a lot of stupid things. :\

  4. kinda surprised you give a hoot (old joke alert). i am a child of the 00s and unaware of anything that ISN'T retro. i think you should adopt a great horney (sic) owl, just for pleasure.

    1. My son inquired why I just LOL'd so much. So, you are still very funny, apparently. I love owls and all, but not for any sort of creepy, horney (sic) pleasure.

  5. I don't mind the owls unless their eyes are waaaay too big, but then I oppose exaggeration in all its forms. The weird thing about bottle cap magnets is that you don't even have to drink a soda or a beer and save the cap--you can buy packs of pristine caps at the craft store.

    1. The magnet bottle caps were neat when they were originally started, but like you said, you can go to any craft store now and they are pre-made, which is rather silly and completely unoriginal. Etsy ruined that too.

  6. Haha, this cracks me up. I never really got the whole owl kick. Every time I think we're getting past it, I see another owl used in some random way and very wisely think... what the???
