America aka Stupidville

I have the app 'Scanner Radio' on my Android which alerts me when over 1,000 people are listening to a channel at any given time.  This generally means something major is going on in that county/city with the police and/or fire department.  Over the last two years I heard about a few big incidents before the national news even had reported the story.  For instance, I heard about the collapsing of the stage at the Indiana State Fair and I also had heard about the Newtown shootings in Connecticut last month before it was being reported anywhere.

When I get the notification alert on my phone, I am mortified to see what the hell is going on, but now it's like I'm almost desensitized to shootings anymore.  Yesterday, there were no deaths in the shooting at the college in Texas, so that one was not a big deal, right?  Wrong.  I have to wonder what people of the world must think of our Country and our gun (lame) laws.

I live less than a mile from my County's fairgrounds, which is a huge county; the county that decided the 2008 election and sealed the election for Obama again this year.  Thank you, once again, Ohio.  The fairgrounds hold events all the time and gun shows are no exception.  There was a gun show two weekends ago and I was in utter shock and disgust when I heard that there were cars backed up over a mile from the highway to the entrance just to get in.  Not only that, but according to the local news, the prices of ammunition at this particular gun show had tripled in cost and people were still lined up as this had not deterred anyone from making their purchases.

What the F#CK is wrong with America???

I get more and more weak in the heart to be loyal to a country that worships weapons and the rights to own such weapons that have no purpose other than to kill.  It saddens me that a 230-year-old Constitution that is so obviously outdated and destructive overpowers people's ability to think intelligently.

I will never understand this obsession with guns.  It is embarrassing to me because I see how others on the outside look at us as Americans and it's not a pretty sight.  I just hope that some of them know that we are all not like this and not all of us have such shallow thinking.  As a mother, a future social worker and a person of reason, I want peace and want to be free of guns and violence.  Maybe one day.  Maybe with our current President, this could be possible.  He is like Obi-Wan Kenobi; He is our only hope.  ::: sigh :::

Makes perfect sense...

  1. Amen to that, sister! Did you hear that someone attending the gun show last weekend in Medina got shot at the gun show? A guy apparently got caught in the crossfire as someone was examining a gun. And these are supposedly people who know how to handle guns???

    1. I heard a few news stories about accidents at gun shows lately, Debbie, but I had not realized one was so close by. Like you said, these are supposedly people who know how to handle guns. More than disturbing.

  2. i started to LOL when i read "stupidville" but then my LOLing silenced. america is still great (ask sidney crosby), or at least a better place to live than afghanistan. but like most "outside"rs, i too cannot understand the obsession. at least lock the damn things up, have compulsory background checks, and limit the amount/type of weapons/munitions a person can own. it's difficult to change the culture overnight, but i have faith in your amazing president to do the right things at the right times. i'd almost be willing to trade crosby for him, to give you a (slight) chance to win the olympics, but don't show this to fellow canuckians. stupidville LOL!!!

    1. It's good to know that we are, at the very least, a better place to live than Afghanistan. And, we don't want Crosby. He's been tainted by being in Shittsburgh for so long, so please, by all means, keep him and I will gladly hold onto and hold out hope with my President.

    2. i was just hoping to get your president after he has transformed america...and crosby will be an old man by then (29 !) and we will have won the olympics again. so the proposed trade still stands, we need him to bring back more canadianism to canada. and i'll even throw in harper and any or all of the maple laffs. btw, we do have guns but we don't need them. we beat you with bows and arrows in the war of 1812 :p

    3. You keep on hoping. What good are low hopes?

    4. better than that stupid song "high hopes", or was the writer doing bongs? (i have no idea what a bong is, it just sounds funny)

    5. If you are speaking of "Ol' Blue Eyes", I didn't know he smoked bongs. And, if you listen to that song, I wouldn't be surprised if he was smoking something besides a bong or two.

On the other hand, if you are speaking of David Gilmour (one of the best guitarists of all time) and Pink Floyd's song "High Hopes", then I think you are the one who has been smoking something.

  3. Well said! I totally agree. What purpose does a gun serve other than to kill? None. Then they go on and on ban cars, ban this, ban that. Um, hello cars have another purpose, duh. Oh but it's for hunting. Where you um kill animals. Ok next. What about target practice? What are you practicing for? Let's see to hit a target as in either an animal or a person. Gun nuts you FAIL! Good day!!!

  4. The gun issue is very different here in Canada - our laws are much stricter. I don't have a problem with someone who enjoys hunting or target shooting: but you cannot just keep a gun in your bedside table drawer here in Canada. And you have to transport them in a very specific manner. I don't know if that's why we have less gun violence; or if it related to our attitudes towards guns.

I just realized I am you 13th follower.
    I hope that's not creepy

    1. I think your laws are pretty well laid out from what I can tell. For me, at this point, I am just so fed up with them that I am over even the hunting and target practicing. Unfortunately, that's what this mess we've gotten ourselves into has done to me. My father was a HUGE gun advocate, so he's probably turning over in his grave. (Sorry, Dad...)

I don't see it as much in Ohio as I hear about it and see it where my sister lives in Tennessee and those in the south, but it's generally bad all over and I'm just over the whole 2nd Amendment.

Anyone that follows me is creepy =O

  5. I'm liberal about many things, but owning weapons is not one of them. I guess I have trouble wrapping my head around this because I grew up around guns and never even entertained the thought of using them to kill people, though they are available for your protection should you need it. And some of us feel we need it, as criminals will always get their hands on weapons either legally or illegally and use them for the wrong reasons.

    1. I, too, grew up around guns. My father probably is rolling around in his grave with how much I am NOT like him in his thinking. He was always very conscientious about gun safety etc., but I still do not see the need for them. My father always claimed he needed them for "protection" too, but honestly, I don't see that ever occurring with people THAT often that it overrides the irresponsibility of what this country has allowed to happen with violence by guns.

I also don't buy into the fact that criminals will get their hands on guns whether they are legal or not. Why have laws at all then? What is the point? You can say that about ANYTHING that is illegal. Why make rape illegal? Rapists will find ways to rape. Why make murder illegal? Murderers will find ways to murder. And the list goes on and on and on...

We have a gun obsession in this country and the sooner we realize it, the sooner we can try and fix it. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening because people are so hell bent on their "2nd Amendment" right to shoot people. Sad.

    1. And that is why we need control, but since the words "gun control" make the ding dongs of America have cows over it, we need to start using different terminology. I do like "common sense gun safety" - no one can argue with common sense, although some will certainly try, I'm sure.
