99 Cats Appeared on my Wall

The Associated Press had a story out today of a woman in Wright, New York whose home was taken over by a plethora of cats - 67 dead and 99 alive (Alive? I assume barely and not so healthy or happy).  She did have the decency to at least store the dead ones in plastic bags in the freezer, though.  Thank goodness for that.

At what number does one stop saying, "I think I need another cat!"?!??!  Was she trying to maintain 100 at all times?  Oy.  She had a 'hoarder mentality' according to the animal shelter. (Ya, think?) This is just sad.  I have to wonder why it took so long for neighbours to notice the stench.

Yowza.

This takes 'Crazy Cat Lady' to a whole new level.

  1. Wow... That might be my house soon. My roommate is STILL feeding that stupid cat, and I guess that cat told his friends where they can find free food, so now there are THREE cats torturing me every night when I get home. :(

    1. I don't know how it works in California, but here if there is a stray that keeps returning like that, we can call the local animal rescue to have them come get it. Maybe you should call and find out.

    2. I thought of doing that but my landlord doesn't want to because she's afraid the cats will be sent to a shelter where they will be killed if they're not adopted soon. Now I feel like an asshole for wanting to call, but I kinda want to do it and pretend like I didn't.

    3. Your landlord is a ding-dong. That's just irresponsible to feed cats at your door and then not take care of them. Maybe you can search out the area and see if there are any no-kill shelters that could take them. :(

  2. this is your most important blog to date: 99 bottles of cats on the wall. Now, if one of those bottles should happen to fall...HOORAY! sorry, too much catnip for me ;)

    1. Not all of my blog posts can be of utmost importance, only a few... such as this one. I'm glad you took notice.

As far as too much catnip? I thought you enjoyed physical sensations of minty coolness. xox

  3. This is just tragic......

Also, I can't imagine how she was able to feed them all. I'm guessing she probably didn't keep up with proper veterinary care, but seriously - HOW did she feed them all?

    1. I imagine that's why there were so many dead ones in the freezer. Yikes. :|

  4. @Lisa-tell your landlord that people working at animal shelters *surprisingly* love animals. It boggles my mind that people think one that works at a shelter is in it to kill animals. Quite the contrary- they will do whatever it takes to save each and every animal. Now, it is true that they sometimes do have to be put to sleep, but that is only after all other options have been exhausted. Actually, most of these animals have a better chance at survival in a shelter than living outdoors. The average lifespan of asastray cat is only two years. Tell that to your landlord. :)

    1. I was thinking the same thing! This cat is always hanging out in the middle of the street when it's not on my front porch, and I can sometimes hear it violently fighting with other cats outside, probably over food, it freaks me out. I will definitely be telling my landlord what you said, this cat needs a real home and not our front porch! Thanks! :)

    2. Definitely good points. I don't see those places eager to kill off any kind of animals. I think your landlord is doing a disservice at this point. :| Hope you can get it worked out, Lisa! Those noises they make when they are fighting are so scary and crazy-sounding. I can't stand that.
